KIDS WITH ALLERGIES – Make it fun!
My number one rule with the kids is to not treat their allergy as a handicap. Sure it’s super scary, but it’s manageable. With proper care and planning your kids can live a normal everyday life. My daughter is 4 years old, loves grocery shopping, cooking, baking and will tell you she can’t eat anything with dairy or wheat in it. Call me crazy, but I think that’s a blessing. Most 4-year old children eat whatever you put in front of them. Mindlessly! My daughter already knows so much about proper nutrition and is well aware how certain foods affect her mood and energy level. The majority of adults I know can’t tune into themselves like that.
My number two rule is to keep it fun! Let them experiment in the kitchen with you. It’s all about trial and error, but that’s the fun part. We’ve made things so terrible that the dogs won’t touch them, and our dogs will eat anything. It’s funny, it’s a memory, and a learning experience. We shop, we cook, we bake, we play in the kitchen. The last thing you want is for your child to be scared of food, or develop a poor relationship with food. We need food to thrive!
